Key Events:

  1. The Opening Ceremony: The carnival kicks off with a grand opening ceremony that sets the tone for the days to come. Colorful banners, lively music, and traditional dances mark the beginning of the festivities, drawing participants and spectators alike into the heart of the celebration.
  2. Children’s Carnival (photo above): An integral part of the Rijeka Carnival is the Children’s Carnival, where young ones take center stage, donning imaginative costumes and joining in the merriment. The streets are filled with laughter and joy as families come together to celebrate the exuberance of youth.
  3. Carnival Parades: The highlight of the Rijeka Carnival is undoubtedly the spectacular parades that wind their way through the city streets. Elaborate floats, masked performers, and vibrant costumes create a kaleidoscope of colors, captivating the onlookers. The parades showcase a mix of traditional Croatian folklore, contemporary themes, and a dash of humor.
  4. Masked Balls: As the sun sets, the carnival takes on a more sophisticated tone with glamorous masked balls. Venues across the city come alive with the sounds of music, laughter, and the clinking of glasses as participants revel in the elegance of these formal events. It’s a chance for attendees to showcase their creativity through unique costumes and masks. If this is too posh for you, there are always half a dozen less uptight events where the atmosphere is more relaxed.
  5. Burial of the Pust: The climax of the Rijeka Carnival is marked by the symbolic “Burial of the Pust.” Pust, a symbolic figure representing winter and all its troubles, is paraded through the streets before being ceremoniously “buried” and set on fire, symbolizing the end of the carnival season. This ritual reflects the age-old tradition of bidding farewell to the hardships of winter and embracing the coming spring.
